Bawumia spends over ȼ553k on campaign ads on Meta between Aug. 4, 2020, to Sept. 18, 2024

The 2024 Presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is Ghana’s top Meta ads spender as the country heads to a major election in December.

With $31,609 (the equivalent of GHȼ553,220.72) spent on Facebook and Instagram ads between Aug. 4, 2020, and Sept. 18, 2024, the Ghana Vice President is the country’s top political ad spender with less than four months to the elections.

JUSTFACT GHANA’s investigations revealed that Dr. Bawumia spent an estimated $3,004 on ads about social issues, elections, and politics between Sept. 12 and Sept. 18, 2024.

Meta Ads Library has revealed that Dr Bawumia’s social media pages were created on March 30, 2012, and have garnered 1.1 million followers on Facebook and 224.2K followers on Instagram.

The NPP 2024 flagbearer is currently running 14 ads, with the highest amount spent on five regions: the Central region, the Northern region, the Western region, the Eastern region, and the Ashanti region.

JUSTFACT GHANA’s research showed that there are ads that are directed at Ghanaians who are on Facebook and Instagram, Meta Ads Library has revealed.

Meta Ads Library showed that Dr Bawumia’s ads on its social media platforms target Ghanaians between the ages of 18 and 65.

JUSTFACT Ghana’s investigations have disclosed that as of Sept. 18, 2024, Dr Bawumia has spent $13,508 on Facebook ads in the Greater Accra region, $6,669 in the Ashanti region, $834 in the Northern region, $313 in the Central region, and $310 in the Brong Ahafo region.

The others are $219 in the Eastern region, $190 in the Volta region, $157 in the Upper East region, and $123 in the Upper West region.

JUSTFACT GHANA’s probe further revealed that ex-President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 Presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), had not spent anything on Meta ads as of Sept. 18, 2024.

Mr Mahama who created his social media pages on June 30, 2012, has 1.5 million followers on Facebook and 351K followers on Instagram, Meta Ads Library has revealed.

The social media platform has disclosed that Mr Mahama’s Facebook and Instagram pages are managed in Ghana and Romania.
