Background

Multiple sources say the police in Ghana have arrested a famous journalist, Serwaa Amihere, for an undisclosed offense.

The claim went viral on X (formerly Twitter) with a section of Ghanaians asking what the GhOne TV presenter had done to deserve an arrest.

Commenting on the issue on X, Kofi Adofo quizzed:

“Serwaa Amihere has been arrested??”

Another X user, Bongo Ideas wrote:

“My source tells me that Serwaa Amihere’s male partner in US who invested in her Office & Co business was the one who wanted her arrested for owing him some amount of money that she’s yet to pay.”

It is not clear where the claim originated from, however, there is a post attributed to an online news portal, Nkonkonsa.com.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the picture of a handcuffed lady, suspected to be the journalist, was taken from a music video.

“Our investigation indicates that the picture circulating online is from a music video,” the police said in a statement on X on Oct. 15, 2024.

The police have encouraged the public to disregard “this misinformation and disinformation.”

JUSTFACT GHANA conducted Google keyword search to determine if any of the reputable media outlets in the West African country has reported on the alleged arrest.

However, the search’s findings showed no media organisation in Ghana had reported on the arrest, and there is no data to support the allegation.

JUSTFACT GHANA’s investigations revealed that journalist Serwaa Amihere played a character in a music video for Ghanaian gospel musician Piesie Esther, which has yet to be released.

Conclusion

The police in Ghana have not arrested celebrated female broadcaster Serwaa Amihere, as alleged on social media.
