Claim: Krobea Kwabena Asante, an aide to the Presidential candidate of Ghana’s governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, reported ex-President John Mahama as saying the country “has the worst food inflation in Africa.”
Verdict: False. JUSTFACT GHANA’s investigations showed that the ex-Ghanaian President, John Mahama, did not make the claim Mr Kwabena Asante attributed to him. Addressing Ghanaians during the launch of the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto, Mr Mahama said the West African country has “one of the highest food inflation rates in Africa.”
Background:
Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) launched its 2024 Manifesto, promising to implement aggressive policies to create millions of sustainable jobs nationwide.
“A destiny that cannot afford to endure one additional day beyond January 7, 2025, of the maladministration, mismanagement, and state capture this nation has been subjected to over the last almost 8 years,” the NDC’s 2024 Presidential candidate, John Mahama said.
Hours later, Krobea Kwabena Asante, an aide to the Presidential candidate of Ghana’s governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, reported ex-President John Mahama as saying the country “has the worst food inflation in Africa.”
“It is [a] Lie when Mahama says Ghana has the worst food inflation in Africa,” Mr Kwabena Asante wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Aug. 24, 2024.
Investigations:
JUSTFACT GHANA’s investigations showed that the ex-Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, did not make the claim Mr Kwabena Asante alleged.
Addressing Ghanaians during the launch of the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto, Mr Mahama said the West African country has “one of the highest food inflation rates in Africa.”
“The scorecard of this administration has been abysmal. An inflation rate that went as high as 54% and is currently hovering above 20%. Ghana has one of the highest food inflation rates in Africa,” Mr Mahama said.
